Understanding the energy equivalence between different fuel types is essential for businesses aiming to optimize energy costs, evaluate fuel efficiency, and make informed decisions during the transition from traditional fuels (DO, FO, LPG…) to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) — a cleaner, higher-efficiency, and more environmentally friendly energy source.
1. Calorific Value Reference Table
Fuel | Unit | Kcal | BTU | mmBTU |
LNG | Kg | 13.114 | 52.042 | 0.052042 |
CNG | Sm3 | 10.080 | 40.001 | 0.040001 |
LPG | Kg | 11.823 | 46.917 | 0.046917 |
DO (Diesel) | Kg | 10.835 | 42.997 | 0.042997 |
FO (Fuel Oil) | Kg | 9.800 | 38.890 | 0.038890 |
Energy Units Explained:
- BTU (British Thermal Unit): Imperial unit of heat energy.
- mmBTU (Million BTU): Equals 1,000,000 BTU.
- Sm³ (Standard Cubic Meter): Volume of gas at standard conditions (15°C, 1 atm).
- Conversion: 1 Kcal = 3.968321 BTU
2. Fuel Energy Conversion Table
Fuel | Unit | Fuel Energy Conversion
LNG (Kg) | CNG (Sm³) | LPG (Kg) | DO (Kg) | FO (Kg)
LNG | 1 Kg | 1 | 1,30099 | 1,10919 | 1,21034 | 1,33816 |
CNG | 1 Sm³ | 0,768802 | 1 | 0,85258 | 0,93032 | 1,02857 |
LPG | 1 Kg | 0,901522 | 1,17292 | 1 | 1,09119 | 1,20643 |
DO (Diesel) | 1 Kg | 0,826198 | 1,07490 | 0,91643 | 1 | 1,10561 |
FO (Fuel Oil) | 1 Kg | 0,747281 | 0,97222 | 0,82889 | 0,90448 | 1 |
3. How to Use the Conversion Table
Example 1 – Converting FO to LNG: A factory currently consumes 1,000 kg of Fuel Oil per day and plans to switch to LNG.
Using the conversion factor:
1,000 kg FO × 0.747281 = 747.3 kg LNG/day
=> Switching to LNG can reduce fuel consumption by 25–30%, while also cutting CO₂ emissions and other harmful pollutants.
Example 2 – Converting CNG to LPG: A system uses 1,200 Sm³ of CNG per day.
Using the conversion factor:
1,200 Sm³ × 0.85258 = 1,023 kg LPG/day
